Minimalistic online portfolio designs may work wonders for showcasing artwork, photographs and web designs as they give space and help visitors focus on your important content.

A lot of graphic designers and photographers have online portfolios to showcase their work and attract new clients. Most would agree that spending time on showing off skills and creativity, building awareness and interest, pays of a lot better than doing cold canvassing and it is a lot more fun and rewarding too.

For some time, many online portfolios have been really colorful and stuffed with visual effects, textures, illustrations, almost like exotic birds showing off their feathers to potential mates. I found a online portfolio showcase at CreativeCan that illustrate this well. Recently, however, I think there are movements towards using more simple and minimalistic designs. I personally like minimalist webdesign and I think the “Less is more” principle works well in web design in general. When it comes to online portfolios I think it is important to consider the overall idea. Is the portfolio itself a case or should it use a minimal design to give the artwork and client cases as much support and focus as possible. Another important trend right now is giving mobile visitors a great experience and in particular I beleive web design portfolios should implement a responsive layout.
