Creating a portfolio of your work is one of the most important things you can accomplish as a photographer. Unfortunately, relatively few photographers create portfolios because they find the process daunting or think their work is not good enough to be included in a portfolio. Others squirm at the idea they will have to review thousands of photographs taken over many years. Yet others do not know how to select photographs for a portfolio. Finally, there are those who believe that a portfolio cannot be created by themselves, that such an endeavor has to be conducted under the control of a museum or a gallery or needs to take place in the context of a retrospective of the artist’s work. It turns out that it is not that hard. The reason is the free publishing platform WordPress and the tons of WordPress Photography themes prepared specifically for creating awesome portfolios fast. Just check this collection of themes and you will see what I mean.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is, literally, a porte folio, in French, meaning a page carrier. A folio is a large page roughly the size of a single newspaper page. Porte means to carry. A porte folio, shortened to portfolio in English, is basically a device designed to carry loose pages. The first goal of the porte folio we might say is to hold these pages together in a secure place so they do not get lost or damaged. For artists these pages are works of art on paper. Although a portfolio is a large page there is no implied size for the contents of a WordPress portfolio theme. Similarly there is no implied restriction on the nature of the works of art placed in a portfolio. These can be drawings, paintings, architectural sketches, photographs, collages, etc. There is also no implied restriction on the type of container to be used.
Here is a collection of 35 fantastic portfolio web designs. This is pure inspiration for anyone considering to create an online portfolio to showcase their photos. I’m an amateur photographer, hoping to start studying photography at College next year and looking at these make me feel a bit lost. I’m trying to build my portfolio but I don’t know where to even begin. Themes are racing through my head yet I can’t seem to find one that works. Do you have any suggestions on where to go from here? 🙂

Great collection! 😉
They are really good. I can never get enough of great photos, they can bring out the creativity in me, at the same time they encourage me to improve more. Do you think they still manipulate these photos?
great to hear from you Allie. Well it is hard to know these days what is authentic…. I think most photographers “optimize” their shots more or less
Quality share, I use countless photographers sites for inspiration, usually minimal!
Thanks a lot WDN, I agree it is great inspiration watching these creative shots…
