Mosaic art dates back to the 3rd millennium BC where artists decorated temples with materials such as shells and colored stone. It is a form of art where many small elements turn into a unified completely when viewed at distance. I find it funny that, even though the mosaic technique is ancient, it certainly got some similarities to modern pixel art created on computers.
Throughout history, mosaics played a central role in decorations of important buildings. Some of the most amazing and huge mosaic artworks can be found in religious buildings for example cathedrals, temples and mansions. Typically, these historic artworks where creates as almost realistic images or high precision patterns. Nowadays mosaics art is used very differently. Some may say it is inspired by creative artists such as Gaudi. Gaudi is known for decorating buildings in Barcelona, Spain with stunning and voluptuous abstract mosaic art in the early 19th century. His artworks primarily consist of broken colored glass and tiles. Today abstract mosaics are popular as wall decorations in kitchens, bathrooms, as road surfaces in parks etc. However, they are also very popular as backgrounds in e.g. web design.
I have found some useful textures and patterns of abstract mosaics that I hope you will find use for in your creative work.
